Not Even Close

Q:

Take the postal abbreviations for two US states one after the other.  Add a letter to the end to name an animal.  Take the same letter and add two different postal abbreviations after it to name another animal from the same family.

    I got the second animal first, one of my favorite animals, about which I can say little else without giving away the answer.
