"What'd Ya Say, Abe?"

Q:

TLA stands for many things, but in this case, it stands for three letter abbreviation.  In the US(A), there are four very well known and very closely related TLA's.  Two contain a two letter US postal abbreviation.  The other two do not.  Name the four TLA's.

A:

Among many things, Abe Lincoln said "Four score...".  The image says "No Eye".  Coaches often tell their players, "There is no "I" in T-E-A-M".  So we are in the sports category.  National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.  The states are Florida and New Hampshire.

NBA       N(FL)       (NH)L       MLB

P(GA) also fits but  is not part of what is referred to as the four majors.

On the radio version (no title or image) another acceptable answer is C(IA), FBI, (DE)A and ATF, all US government law enforcement agencies.  Thank you, Paul.

  1. Prior to today, TLA would've meant nothing to me. But, I can see how it might mean any number of things.
Given that it means "three letter abbreviation", I have four "three letter abbreviatiations" that are "related" ('very closely' is pretty subjective, don't you think?); and two of them include a US postal abbreviation and two do not.
Those that include US postal abbreviations do NOT include the SAME US postal abbreviation.

    In my construct.

  2. I will be curious to see if there are multiple correct answers. However, as the title and image normally provide clues, in this instance they may provide parameters leading to the intended answer.

And, yes. The states are many miles apart.

  3. Hmmm. That will require some thought.

  4. OK, Paul. I finally see your answer. If you can tie into the title and image, I will send you a gold star.

  5. Oddly (or not), your two non-postals can be anagrammed into something handed to us almost daily. A future puzzle perhaps...

  6. This may be a thin excuse, but I fear identifying my title and image connection might lead to an unfortunate consequence outside of this department.

  7. It could be argued that Det. Sgt. Phil Fish became "no eye" when he resigned from the NYPD, but I think I'll just "chicken out", tune in Garrison Kiellor, and wait for the new NPR puzzle to pop up.
